COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.- The City of Colorado Springs Community Development Division is pleased to offer more “Renter Rights 101” informational sessions in 2019. In collaboration with Colorado Legal Services and Pikes Peak Library District, the community development division is offering three different workshops to educate renters on the rights and responsibilities that come with renting a home.

Pikes Peak Library District will host all three identical workshops at its north side, downtown, and southeast branches.

Presenters from Colorado Legal Services, PPLD and the City will address a wide variety of topics such as lease basics, reasonable accommodations and modifications, Fair Housing Act protections, deposits, repairs, and eviction.  Library and City staff will share local resources and materials available on housing issues.

Each event will offer the same information. The sessions are free, but space is limited. Attendees can RSVP at the EventBrite links below to guarantee a seat. Light refreshments will be provided.

After two packed sessions in the fall of 2018, event organizers recognized the need for more housing education in the Colorado Springs area, where over 40 percent of the population rents.

In addition to the City’s partnering organizations, these sessions are also made possible by Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds. The primary purpose of CDBG funds is to serve low- and moderate-income residents who reside within the city limits of Colorado Springs. The community development division also uses its CDBG funds to provide fair housing educational opportunities to the community, as part of its efforts to affirmatively further fair housing.

Colorado Legal Services is a non-profit organization helping low-income individuals and seniors in Colorado. The workshops will offer general information for tenants, but cannot provide specific legal advice. Low-income residents or senior citizens facing a housing issue can contact Colorado Legal Services at (719) 471-0380 for legal assistance.

In accordance with the ADA, anyone requiring an auxiliary aid or interpreter service to participate in this hearing should make the request as soon as possible but no later than 48 hours before the event. To make this request, please contact Community Development staff at catherine.duarte@coloradosprings.gov or 719-385-5912.
