On Monday, February 27, 2023, at approximately 2:40 PM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a deputy-involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency in the area of the Zero-Hundred Block of Easy Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado, located in an unincorporated area within El Paso County. Detectives with the CSPD Violent Crimes/Homicide Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation. While it is early in the investigation, CSPD is able to provide the following initial information.

On Monday, February 27, 2023, at approximately 2:20 PM, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) Communications Center received a 911 call reporting a Felony Menacing, where a man was menacing a person with a gun. A short time after, a follow-up caller reported multiple shots fired in the area of the Zero-Hundred Block of Easy Street.

EPSO deputies along with Fountain Police Department (FPD) officers responded to a home in the area of the Zero-Hundred Block of Easy Street and saw the suspect within the home. The suspect fired at least one round at law enforcement personnel. As a result, one EPSO deputy fired their duty weapon at least one time toward the suspect.
As a result, the EPSO's Tactical Support Group ("TSG", consisting of SWAT, K9, Tactical Medics from the Colorado Springs Fire Department, Tactical Dispatchers, members of the Bomb Squad, and Crisis Negotiators) responded to the scene. Containment was established around the home and efforts by negotiators to communicate with the suspect to obtain his peaceful surrender commenced.

The suspect remained in the home and after hours of off-and-on communication with negotiators, he still refused to exit the home. At approximately 6:42 p.m., the EPSO SWAT team made entry into the home and arrested 52-year-old Robert Wood. Wood was transported to a local hospital for a gunshot wound to his leg; no deputies or officers were injured in this incident.

In accordance with Colorado Revised Statute 16-2.5-301, the Colorado Springs Police Department is the lead investigative agency for this officer-involved shooting. The EPSO Deputy identified as having fired their weapon has been placed on administrative leave per their department policies.

This is an ongoing investigation and information will be released as appropriate. All information regarding the deadly force investigation will come from the Colorado Springs Police Department. Information regarding the law enforcement officers involved in this incident will come from EPSO.

This is still an active and on-going investigation.
