Circle Drive Bridges Open House

The public is invited to learn about the City’s plans to replace the Circle Drive Bridges and provide comment during a project open house.  Although a date for reconstruction has not yet been set, the City has initiated the planning and design process and is seeking public feedback.

The Circle Drive Bridges were originally built in 1963. The eastbound and westbound lanes of Circle Drive are carried on a total of four bridges consisting of two sets of twin structures. The overall bridge width for both structures is 82 feet and carries two lanes of traffic in both directions. They span over Fountain Creek, the BNSF railroad, the FMIC (Irrigation), Las Vegas Street, Hancock Expressway, and Pikes Peak Greenway Trail.

“Having exceeded their 50-year service life, and after in-depth analyses of the existing condition, the City has initiated a planning and design process to replace the bridges,” said City Project Manager Ryan Phipps. “The replacement project will assure the new bridges perform better and are safer for the community, while potentially reducing impacts to the traveling public during construction.”

The Project Team is partnering with students from Harrison High School who are serving as Student Ambassadors. The students are providing project information and gathering public feedback while being introduced to bridge replacement planning and design processes.   “It is truly exciting in seeing our youth ambassadors fully engaged in the Circle Drive Bridges Replacement project,” said Yolanda L.  Avila, City Councilmember District 4.  “These young students have gone out into the community and have returned with relevant input. Imagine the lasting impact that this project will have, not only on the ambassadors, but on future generations. I am immensely grateful to the entire project team!”

The student ambassadors were selected to be part of this program due to their interest in road construction, engineering and public communications. Having spent a day touring the project site and visiting with engineers, they will present project observations to City Council during its regular meeting beginning 1 p.m., Tuesday, April 23 at City Hall, 107 N. Nevada Avenue.  The students will also participate in the April 25 public open house interacting with the public.
