North Cheyenne Cañon Construction Projects

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The City of Colorado Springs will be leading a major construction project in North Cheyenne Cañon Park starting from Mon, March 28. The work is anticipated to cause travel delays affecting park access for the next two months.

The work includes:

  • Replacement of 33 existing culverts in the park
  • Repaving of North Cheyenne Cañon Rd. after the completion of the culvert replacement work
  • Construction in April on the Evans Avenue Bridge near the entrance to the North Cheyenne Cañon

The culvert replacement project will cost $200,000 and will be funded by the City’s stormwater repair fund. There are no anticipated trail closures. Vehicular access may be limited at select trailheads at times, though the phased closures will still allow the public to access the park. Detours and alternate routes will be provided. For more information, please visit

Road Closures for the next 6 weeks:

  • The work will take place during the weekdays, beginning Mondays 7 a.m. through Friday 5 p.m.
  • During this time, the road will be closed for 24 hrs. a day
  • The road closures will be lifted on Fridays at 5 p.m. allowing complete access to the roadway during the weekends

The roadway will be closed in three separate segments (phased rolling closures):

  • Phase A- uphill of the Canyonwood subdivision driveway to Gold Camp Rd. This includes the entire Gold Camp Rd. from the east parking lot to the start of the asphalt (3 culverts)
  • Phase B- from the Starsmore Ctr. to Mt. Cutler/Mt. Muscoco Trailhead (12 culverts)
  • Phase C- from Mt. Cutler/Mt. Muscoco Trailhead to the Canyonwood subdivision driveway (18 culverts)

Repaving of the North Cheyenne Cañon Road

At the conclusion of the culvert replacement work, Public Works will begin repaving the asphalt road from the intersection of North Cheyenne Cañon Rd. /South Cheyenne Cañon Rd. (Starsmore Center) to the end of asphalt at the larger gravel parking lot at North Cheyenne Cañon Rd./Gold Camp Rd. The project timeline is unavailable at this time. The roadway paving project will be funded through the voter approved 2C ballot measure in Nov 2015.
The Evans Avenue Bridge Project

The City will also begin construction in April on the Evans Avenue Bridge near the entrance to North Cheyenne Cañon. The project will replace the existing, structurally deficient bridge and make pedestrian improvements. Access to parking near Starsmore Discovery Center will remain open and a detour will be signed during construction.  More information can be found at
