COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Springs Airport was honored with a CO/WY Chapter of the American Concrete Pavement Association’s (ACPA) Excellence in Concrete Paving Award for the construction of a new 10-acre concrete deicing apron.
“Thanks to the collaboration between the airport, RS&H and Villalobos Concrete Company, as well as a number of subconsultants and subcontractors, this project was a resounding success and will serve the airport and surrounding communities for many years to come,” said Steven Gaeta, Colorado Springs Airport Design and Construction Manager.
The new deice apron was built to provide a deicing facility for commercial aircraft right next to the departure end of the runway during the colder parts of the year, but will also be utilized during the summer months as part of a United States Forest Service (USFS) airtanker base for aerial firefighting. USFS contributed to the project in partnership with COS.
The project, which received an award in the Commercial Service Airports category, included a full excavation, underground utilities, infrastructure for separating deicing chemicals from stormwater and a significant amount of electrical work.
RS&H served as the designer and engineer for the project, while Villalobos Concrete Company was the prime contractor.
The ACPA Annual Awards for Excellence in Concrete Pavement are designed to honor quality concrete pavements constructed each year. The awards program recognizes contractors, engineers, and project owners who completed outstanding projects.
